Mechanism of Action Animation
A mechanism of action animation shows how a drug or biologic produces its effect inside the body — binding to its target, triggering a cascade, and clearing. It is the single most requested format in medical animation because a mechanism that takes ten minutes and three slides to describe can be shown in sixty seconds and understood the first time. For an early-stage biotech, that difference is commercial: when an investor cannot picture how your compound works, they price the uncertainty into the deal. MOA animation is used in Series A and B raises, partnering meetings, grant applications, congress symposia and MSL leave-behinds. The animation is built from your own data — pathway diagrams, structural files, published literature — and reviewed against it at storyboard stage, before a single frame is rendered.
What an MOA project actually looks like
A typical mechanism-of-action project starts with a conversation and a folder: the pathway as the team describes it out loud, plus whatever already exists — a figure from a paper, a slide the CSO uses, a structural file, the relevant literature. From that comes a written script that states, in sequence, what happens and what the viewer should understand at each point. This is the document where accuracy is settled, and it is the cheapest place to be wrong.
Once the script is agreed, the storyboard turns it into frames: camera positions, scale transitions from tissue to cell to molecule, what is labelled and when. Scale transitions are where non-specialist audiences most often lose the thread, so they get signposted deliberately rather than left to the viewer to infer.
Only then does anything get modelled, animated and rendered. By the time frames are being produced, the science is no longer in question — which is the entire reason the sequence runs in that order.
What does an MOA animation need from you to start?
A description of the mechanism in your own words, any pathway or structural references you already use, and the audience it is for. Investor and congress audiences need different levels of detail from the same science, and that decision is made at script stage rather than at the end.
How long should an MOA animation be?
Sixty to ninety seconds covers most mechanisms and is the length that fits a pitch deck, a congress loop and a website header without recutting. Longer runtimes are worth it when the mechanism has genuinely distinct stages that an audience needs to see sequentially.
Is the science reviewed before animation starts?
Yes. The mechanism is agreed in a written script and then a storyboard, both signed off before production. Correcting a mechanism at script stage costs a conversation; correcting it after rendering costs the render.
What does an MOA animation cost?
Projects start at $3,000 for a 30-second piece where the mechanism is already settled, and $5,000 for a 60–90 second sequence built from your literature. Molecular-scale work under multi-stakeholder review sits at $9,000 and above. The tier follows how much scientific work sits behind the animation, not runtime alone.
Can the same animation work for investors and for congress?
Only if that is decided at the start. The renders can be shared; the edit, the pacing and the level of on-screen labelling usually cannot. A generalist investor audience needs the one mechanism that carries the case, while a specialist congress audience needs the full pathway including the nuance. Building the specialist version first and cutting down is normally cheaper than the reverse.
Who actually builds the animation?
The studio is directed by a doctor — a practising-trained radiologist with a master’s in diagnostic radiology — and the science is reviewed by that person rather than passed down a chain. On an MOA project that matters at script stage, where the question is whether the mechanism as written is actually what happens.
